Here are some of the most commonly recited duas for the sick in Islam, along with their translations and instructions on how to recite them:
Dua for the Sick – Removing Pain and Healing
اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ النَّاسِ أَذْهِبِ الْبَأْسَ وَاشْفِ أَنْتَ الشَّافِي لَا شِفَاءَ إِلَّا شِفَاؤُكَ شِفَاءٌ لَا يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا
Transliteration: Allahumma Rabban-naas adhhibil-ba’sa washfi Antash-Shaafi laa shifaa’a illaa shifaa’uk shifaa’an laa yughaadiru saqamaa.
Translation: “O Allah, the Lord of mankind, remove the difficulty and bring about healing as You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing, a healing that will leave no ailment.”
Dua for the Sick – Asking Allah for Healing
أَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ الْعَظِيمَ رَبَّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ أَنْ يَشْفِيَكَ
Transliteration: As’alullaahal-‘Adheema Rabbal-‘Arshil-‘Adheemi ‘an yashfiyaka.
Translation: “I ask Allah who is the Lofty and the Lord of the Mighty Throne that He cures you.”
It is recommended to recite this dua seven times, as Prophet Mohammad (SAW) said that by doing so, the ill person will regain their health, and if death occurs, it is a different issue.
Dua for Protection and Healing
أَعوذُ بِعِزَّةِ اللَّهِ وَقُدْرَتِهِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا أَجِدُ وَأُحَاذِرُ
Transliteration: A’udhu bi’izzatillahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa ‘uhadhiru.
Translation: “I seek protection in the might of Allah and His power from the evil of what I am experiencing and of what I fear.”
This dua is recommended to be recited while the ill person places their right hand on the area of pain.
Dua of Prophet Ayub (A.S.) for Healing
أَنِّي مَسَّنِيَ ٱلضُّرُّ وَأَنتَ أَرۡحَمُ ٱلرَّـٰحِمِي
Transliteration: Annee massaniyad durru wa Anta arhamur raahimeen.
Translation: “Verily, distress has seized me, and You are the Most Merciful of all those who show mercy.”
This dua was recited by Prophet Ayub (A.S.) when he was afflicted with leprosy, and it is considered powerful for seeking healing.
General Dua for Well-being
رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
Transliteration: Rabbana ‘atinaa fid dunyaa hasanat wafil aakhirati hasana taw wa qinaa azaaban naar.
Translation: “Oh Allah Our Lord and Sustainer Grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and save us from the Fire of Hell.”
This dua is all-encompassing and seeks good in both this life and the afterlife.
