Here are the key duas for travel, or “Safar Dua,” as recommended in Islamic tradition:
Before Starting the Journey
“Bismillahi, majreha wa mursaha. Inna Rabbi laghafoorur rahim.”
Translation: “In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.”
Transliteration: “Bismillahi, majreha wa mursaha. Inna Rabbi laghafoorur rahim.”.
When Mounting a Vehicle or Mode of Transport
“Subhanalladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin. Wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqalibun.”
Translation: “Glory to Him Who has subjected this to us, and we could never have it by our efforts. And indeed, to our Lord, we will surely return.”
Transliteration: “Subhanalladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin. Wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqalibun.”.
Entering a New City or Town
“Rabbi adkhilnee mudkhala sidqinw wa akhrijnee mukhraja sidqinw waj’al lee milladunka sultaanan naseeraa.”
Translation: “My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority.”
Transliteration: “Rabbi adkhilnee mudkhala sidqinw wa akhrijnee mukhraja sidqinw waj’al lee milladunka sultaanan naseeraa.”.
Seeking Protection in a New Place
“Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min sharri hadha al-balad wa min sharri ahlihi wa min sharri ma feehi.”
Translation: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of this place and the evil of its people and the evil of what is in it.”.
Returning from Travel
“Aiboona, ta’iboona, ‘abidoona, lirabbina hamidoon.”
Translation: “Returning, repenting, worshipping, and praising our Lord.”
Transliteration: “Aiboona, ta’iboona, ‘abidoona, lirabbina hamidoon.”.
General Protection During Travel
“A’udhu bikalimat-illahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaqa.”
Translation: “I seek refuge with the Perfect Words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.”
This dua is recommended to be recited when stopping at a place to seek protection from any harm.
Protection for the Traveler and Family
“Allahumma anta as-sahibu fissafari wal-khalifatu fil-ahli.”
Translation: “O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Guardian of the family.”
This prayer seeks Allah’s protection for both the traveler and their family.
