When facing an earthquake or seeking protection from such calamities, here are some guidelines and prayers that can be observed:
General Supplications
There is no specific dua (supplication) in the Sunnah that is mandatory to recite during an earthquake. However, it is recommended to offer prayers for forgiveness, supplications, and to beseech Allah for mercy and help.
Recommended Actions
- Repent to Allah and ask for well-being.
- Engage in a great deal of remembrance of Allah and ask for His forgiveness, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said during an eclipse: “When you see that, then turn to remembrance of Allah and call upon Him and ask for His forgiveness.”
- Show compassion to the poor and needy, and give charity, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Show mercy, you will be shown mercy.”
Example of a Dua
While there is no specific dua for earthquakes, one can use general supplications for protection and mercy. Here is an example of a dua that can be recited for protection from various calamities, including earthquakes:
“Allahummar-fa’ ‘annal-ghala wal-waba’ war-riba waz-zina wazzalazila wal-mihan, wa su’al-fitan, ma dhahara minha wa ma batan, bi rahmatika ya arhamar-rahimeen.”
“O Allah Remove from us transgression, plagues, fornication, earthquakes and tests, and bad trials, both apparent and hidden, with Your Mercy, O Most Merciful!”
Additional Guidance
- It is also advisable to seek refuge in Allah from the evil of the calamity, similar to the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) prayer during strong winds: “O Allah, I ask You for its good and the good of what is in it and the good of what it is sent with, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what is in it and the evil of what it is sent with.”
